Sweet and Sour Meatball Pizza Recipe

Sweet and Sour Meatball Pizza

Today’s pizzas is a take on my meatball pizza – a staple of mine for many years and one of the first pizzas I blogged about when I started the 52 Pizza Project two years ago. But instead of marinating the meatballs in marinara, I used my mom’s sweet and sour meatball recipe. The final product was excellent: the sweet and sour sauce tasted delicious with the mozzarella cheese and the thin crispy crust.

My family’s homemade sweet and sour sauce recipe includes white distilled vinegar, ketchup, onions and a few other items. I cheated on the meatballs though. I haven’t had my meatball lesson with my mother-in-law yet, so until then it’s store  bought turkey meatballs. While the meatballs simmered in the sauce, I pre-baked the dough. Then I spread on the sweet and sour sauce, topped it with mozzarella cheese and the meatballs before putting the pizza back in the oven for a few minutes. The only thing I might do differently next time is cut the meatballs in half before putting them on the pizza to keep them from rolling off!

#10 ½ : Molly’s Meatball Pizza Recipe 3/6/10

Molly Meatball Pizza

My sister Molly is a budding chef. She usually makes desserts for family gatherings; they are always fantastic! There must be a pizza-loving gene in our DNA because she loves pizza almost as much as I do. We spent the afternoon together and we ended up making pizza. I’m turning over the computer to her to blog about her pizza.

The pizza Suz and I made is a meatball pizza. I love meatballs just like I love pizza, so why not combine them? The trick is to sprinkle cheese on the pizza after you put the meatballs on. (To make the meat balls extra cheesy!) When I took my first bite, I was amazed at how good the pizza was! The perfect balance of cheese, meatballs, and sauce!  Three words: Best. Pizza. Ever.

#4: Meatball Pizza Recipe 1/30/10

Meatball pizza was one of the pizzas I used to make when I lived by myself using my mom’s pizza dough and vegetarian meatballs. This time I used my own pizza dough, store bought turkey meatballs, and sautéed red onion. And of course, marinara and mozzarella cheese. This pizza was fabulous; we fought over the leftovers! The only thing I might change next time would be to make my own meatballs. Although, I tried that once years ago and it didn’t turn out too great. But, I’m a better cook now and I’m willing to give it a try again. I will surely come back to this pizza recipe.
