New England is known to have amazing seafood. Clams are used in recipes including clams casino, clam chowder and steamed clams. Many pizzerias have attempted to create a white clam pizza, but none compare to The Original Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven Connecticut. Pepe’s has been serving pizza since 1925. It was in the 1960’s that Pepe’s began serving their white clam pizza.
Pepe’s signature dish is served with fresh clams, garlic, oil, grated cheese and oregano. I have heard wonderful things about this pizza so I decided not to stray too far from Pepe’s recipe when creating my white clam pizza.
After pre-baking the dough I drizzled on a little oil, minced garlic, and then spread on mozzarella cheese. Next I added the clams and then sprinkled on some crushed red pepper and oregano. I let it bake for 10 minutes and then dug in. The spice from the red pepper and flavors of the garlic and clams together tasted amazing! I am now a big fan of white clam pizza!
